Despite being slightly intimidating to some, hair oils are in fact great multitaskers. And, believe it or not, there’s one out there for every hair type – yes, even those with fine, thin hair can use an oil. “Natural oils help to nourish your hair with vital nutrients like vitamins, antioxidants, fatty acids and omegas,” says Briogeo’s founder, Nancy Twine. “All of these nutrients contribute to your hair’s overall health, working to repair and prevent future damage as well as offering many other benefits,” she adds. Read on to discover why you should add one to your routine right now. Plus, the expert tricks for maximising the benefits of an oil…
Hair Oils Repair And Protect…
If you’re an avid user of heat and won’t leave the house without using your straighteners or curlers, you’ve probably noticed some dryness and split ends. Undeniably one of of the best advantages of a hair oil is that it can really help to repair damage, as well as strengthen and protect. “Our NEW Don’t Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Oil is packed full of essential lipids, like ceramides, and fatty acid ingredients to help repair and protect each strand,” says Nancy. What we love most about this particular oil is that it is incredibly lightweight and doesn’t leave your hair feeling lank or greasy.
They Work Wonders For Boosting Moisture…
Another bonus is they work wonders for adding almost instant hydration to super dry strands. Charlotte Mensah’s Manketti Oil is a firm favourite. “My Manketti Oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids which acts as a barrier to help prevent moisture from escaping,” says Charlotte. “It’s enriched with a unique blend of organic and sustainably sourced manketti nut and ximenia oils to really condition and nourish all hair types.”
Another way of reaping the benefits of these oils are with the Manketti Oil Shampoo and Conditioner, which contain humectants to attract moisture and allow it to penetrate deep into the hair shaft for long-lasting moisture.
Hair Oils Also Help To Combat Frizz…
As hair oils help to increase moisture and smooth your hair cuticles, you can expect noticeably less frizz too. They can also help block out humidity, which is often one of the biggest culprits for unwanted frizz throughout the summer months.
If your hair is feeling particularly frizzy, you can use a hair oil as a pre-shampoo treatment. Simply massage an oil of your choice into the mid-lengths and ends, leave it for at least 20 minutes, if not longer, and then wash your hair as usual.
They’re Suitable For All Hair Types…
“Hair oils can be a love or hate product, especially for those with oilier hair,” says Michael Lendon, Aveda’s creative director. He firmly believes that working out what you want from a oil and using it accordingly. “When you use an oil correctly it can be your saviour,” promises Michael.
For example, Aveda’s Nutriplentish Hair Oil offers multiple uses and delivers naturally-derived nutrients to boost hydration and shine for all hair types. It’s also lightweight enough that even those with thin and fine hair can use it.
Michael has one top tip for when you’re shopping for a hair oil though: “Avoid formulas with silicones as they coat the hair without treating the problem and instead leave a product build-up, which can ironically result in dryness.”
How To Maximise Your Hair Oil
So, how should you use an oil to achieve the results you want? Here are just three handy ways to approach hair oils. If you haven’t used an oil before or are road testing a new formula, use it sparingly to begin with until you know how much your hair needs.
For smoothing frizz:
Try using four to six (depending on the length and thickness of you hair) drops of Olaplex’s No. 7 Bonding Oil or Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Oil on damp hair. The oils will be better absorbed and help to lock in moisture and fight frizz.
For shine boosting:
Apply an oil, such as Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil into dry hair. This not only offers some serious shine, but it will also help to smooth and disguise any split ends.
For reviving a dry scalp and hair:
As we mentioned before, you can also use oils pre-shampoo for a hydration hit or even overnight. If you have textured hair, Charlotte also recommends massaging one or two drops of her Manketti Hair Oil into your scalp once a day to help nourish your hair and boost circulation. We love Mauli Grow Strong Hair Oil for trick this too.
