Ever spotted makeup remnants on your pillow in the morning or noticed a smudge of colour lurking beneath your eyes? Most of us have seen the evidence of a less than perfect cleansing regime or suffered from a pesky breakout as a result, and while a quick sweep of micellar water may be sufficient to remove surface makeup, you really need a proper cleanse to reach a little deeper and achieve your brightest and healthiest skin. Enter double cleansing. It’s as straightforward as it sounds and is the practise of cleansing twice at night to ensure all makeup and grime from the day is whisked away. What are the benefits of double cleansing?

The aim of double cleansing is to ensure skin is thoroughly cleaned to a deeper level to prevent breakouts, minimise pigmentation and boost glow. “Cleansing once in the morning is sufficient for most people but it’s important to double cleanse at night when your skin will have been exposed to dirt, pollutants, oils and sweat during the day,” says Kendra Flockhart, Darphin Sales and Education Executive. After cleansing you should always check that no residue comes up on your cotton pad, flannel or towel and if you notice any, make sure to reapply your cleanser until your cotton pad passes the ‘wipe clean’ test. Adding a second cleanse will also help to increase the efficacy of the rest of your skincare and over time as your complexion looks clearer, pores become less visible and the chances of breakouts are reduced, you will be able to cut down on the amount of makeup you use too.

Why is using two different cleanser types beneficial?

There are two main families of cleanser; oil based and water based. “Oil based cleansers are primarily made of vegetable cleansing oils, while water based cleansers most commonly come in foaming or balmy textures,” says Joel Rubin, Senior Vice President, DCL Skincare. Think of double cleansing as a two-part process with each step best supported by different types of cleansers and their individual characteristics.

“Oils are best suited to lifting dirt, grime and environmental pollutants, while water based cleansers effectively help to wash away remnants of dirt and grim and thoroughly cleanse the skin,” says Joel. Two of our favourite oil cleansers are Votary’s Cleansing Oil in Rose Geranium & Apricot and Sunday Riley’s antioxidant rich C.E.O C+E Micro-Dissolve Cleansing Oil. For water-based options we love Caudalie’s Instant Foaming Cleanser that combines extracts of sage, chamomile and grape to help impurities slip away.

Which type of cleanser suits my skin type?

Double cleansing is suitable for all skin types, however if you have particularly sensitive skin be careful when deciding which combinations of cleanser to use, and be wary of using acid-based cleansers which may aggravate the skin. If you have dry skin, balmy textures that include emollients will help to nourish and hydrate, try Darphin’s Aromatic Cleansing Balm that contains a blend of moisturising jojoba, marula and ylang-ylang. For oily skin a foaming cleanser is particularly effective, while formulas that incorporate an acid or fruit enzymes like DCL’s C Scape Enzymatic Gel Cleanser, help to brighten and promote healthy cell turnover.

Should you use a flannel or face cloth when double cleansing?

Incorporating a flannel or muslin cloth into your routine brings with it the additional benefits of manual cleansing and exfoliation, encouraging the physical dislodging of dirt, grime and makeup. It can also be used to add a calming element to your ritual; try running a flannel under hand-hot water and holding it close to your face to allow the steam to release grime from blocked pores. For sensitive skin types or frequent travellers, a lightweight muslin cloth is a gentle option that dries quickly for easy on-the-go cleansing.
