Who would have thought six months ago that a face mask would be the new staple in our lives? Even if you did call it, I doubt you would have given much thought to the trouble they would cause to our skin. Regardless of your skin type, masks can exacerbate any skin problems you may have. They trap makeup, sweat and SPF and can result in ‘maskne’ across your cheeks and jawline.
With naturally oily skin, wearing a face mask regularly has caused havoc with my complexion. I’ve taken a two-pronged approach by upgrading my mask and tweaking my routine. The Reusable Silk Face Covering by Slip is not only comfortable and easy to breathe through, the lining is 100% cotton so it’s kinder to my skin and causes less irritation.
In terms of my skincare routine, I’ve stripped it back and opted for formulas that help to rebalance my sebum production, keep my pores clean and banish blemishes.
After wearing a mask on and off throughout the day, I like to give my skin a thorough cleanse when I get home. The aim is to get rid of all the sweat, makeup and sebum that has built-up, so I always start with a micellar water. A great one is Drunk Elephant’s debut micellar water. It’s formulated with ultra-mild micelles, which work to dissolve and lift away makeup and grime. I’m a great believer in double cleansing, so I follow with a balm cleanser.
The Deep Pore Treatment
After my evening cleanse, I’ve been applying salicylic acid to target any breakouts, especially along my jawline. The liquid exfoliator by Paula’s Choice has been a lifesaver. This formula helps to clear blocked pores and strip away dead skin cells, leaving you with a smoother, fresher feeling complexion.
The Rebalancing Gel
Another amazing product for oily and breakout prone skin is this one from Murad. It’s a really lightweight gel that can be used in the morning or evening. At the moment I am wearing less makeup and have been applying it before my moisturiser in the morning to help keep my skin clear of blemish-causing bacteria.
The Hydrating Soother
A barrier cream is another product that has come in really handy when it comes to dealing with maskne The Cream by Augustinus Bader is a great moisturiser for the day as it’s incredibly lightweight but also really hydrating. The formula has a combination of beautiful ingredients which help to soothe irritation, lock-in hydration and support a healthy-looking complexion. The Cream is ideal for all skin types too.
The On-The-Spot Fix
Lastly, for individual spots and angry flare-ups I love this formula from Ren Clean Skincare. The treatment not only helps reduce the size of any spots, it also aids the healing process without drying out and damaging your skin. It’s really helped with any pesky breakouts I’ve had recently from wearing a mask.
