The Wind Down

Saturdays tend to be consumed with domestic chores, so Sunday is reserved for simply savouring the pleasure of being. There are no to do lists or planning for the week ahead, it’s my time to empty my mind and unplug, and I feel a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation from the moment I wake. I’ll head to a yoga or spin class, go for a long walk on Hampstead Heath with my husband Bittu, son Marni and our dog Star, and drop in at the local farmers’ market to collect ingredients before heading home to cook.

Bittu volunteers at our local ‘not-for-profit’ cinema so he’ll do a bar shift early evening and I’ll join him after to catch a movie or otherwise, this will be the time I begin my Sunday rituals. If I’m staying at home, my wind down starts at about 4pm and it starts the same way every week, with a bath. I have a bath every single night – it’s non-negotiable – it’s my natural reset point and signals the start of the most relaxed part of the day. I’ve only missed a bath once in the last seven months and that’s because we’re in the middle of a renovation and the builders turned the water off. I was heartbroken. I find baths very healing; I love the stillness and the fact that there’s nothing to do but just be there. I light our Sundaram & Silence Candle and pour Mauli Himalayan Healing Salts into the water. While prepping for my bath I’m rather partial to a bit of romantic 70s Bollywood music (much to the boys’ amusement) or even Indian bhajans, but the moment I dip my toe in the water it’s unbroken silence.

The Routine

Because self-nurturing rituals are such a big part of my life, we converted our bedroom to incorporate the bathroom, which features a big roll top bath, and on Sunday this becomes my silent reprieve for the next two hours or so. I’ll start by cleansing and nourishing my skin. I use Votary‘s Super Seed Cleansing Oil to wash my face, mixed with Mauli Radiance Multi-tasking Exfoliant & Mask to exfoliate and sometimes I’ll pop a sheet mask on as well. We’re about to launch a body scrub so I’ve been trying out variations of that for months now and am loving it, but I also like to use Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub. Once I get out of the bath I give my body a long, slow massage and this can last up to an hour. I massage my body from head to toe using one of our Ayurvedic dosha blends, I shift between Serenity, Spirited or Surrender depending on how I’m feeling. While I’m doing this, I might listen to a podcast. I like SuperSoul Sunday – Oprah’s podcast – there are some very good speakers on there and I love reading so I might listen to an audio book. Anything that encourages growth and evolving. I’ll also apply Tan-Luxe’s The Body Illuminating Tan Drops all over my body and Legology Air-Lite Daily Lift for Legs. Next, I’ll apply Mauli Grow Strong Treatment Oil to my scalp. I apply this oil once a week and start at the top of my head and massage it into the scalp as if shampooing my hair, kneading with my hands all the way down to and around the ears – this helps stimulate the follicles and moisturise the scalp. Because our scalps our not on show we tend to forget them. I leave the hair oil in overnight and wash out with Windle & Moodie Ultra Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner on Monday morning. I’ll also apply Rossano Ferretti Intenso Softening and Smoothing Serum to the ends to reduce any frizz.

Bedtime

After bathing, I’ll get into my pyjamas and lounge on my bed. It’s my favourite place in the whole house and I spread my books, papers and products everywhere. My son Marni will come and join me a bit later and we’ll sit together on the bed and play Connect Four or Trivial Pursuit – some sort of family game that’s not too serious but gives us time to bond; because when you have a teenage son you never really get to see them! Before I go to sleep, I’ll cleanse my skin again, brush my teeth and apply Mauli Supreme Skin Serum – it’s my desert island product and I can’t live without it. My skin is dry and I have some pigmentation, so the serum helps with this. My mother only ever used oils on her skin and she still has the most soft, luminous complexion. I’m slighter darker around the eyes and would love to try the Foreo Iris Illuminating Eye Massager. Lastly, I dab my pulse points with Surrender Body Oil and mediate for 10 minutes before I switch the lights out. I’ll moisturise my hands with Reawaken Hand & Body Lotion and spray my pillow with This Works Sleep Plus+ Pillow Spray and read until about 11pm. I also like to write a little gratitude journal and include five things I feel blessed for on that day.

Monday Morning

I don’t have an alarm and wake up naturally at around 6.30am, which gives me time to meditate and prep for the day. I’ll have a drink of warm water with lemon and give Star a big hug because he’s right there wagging his tail waiting to start the day. I prepare breakfast for Marni and then we walk together to school and work. I’m in the office by 8.15am, about 45 minutes before anyone gets in so I have time to gather my thoughts and prepare for the week.
