It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if you want great makeup you need to start with great skin, so we were pretty excited when it came to taking a peek inside Global Makeup for Hourglass Cosmetics, Chanel Temple‘s Sunday night routine. Read on to hear the lowdown on her skin-clarifying favourites and fast hydration fixes…

The Wind Down

I usually start winding down around 9pm. I like to get my skincare routine out of the way so I can watch some of my favourite shows or read before bed. Sundays are usually my day of rest, the day I clean the house or lay in bed allowing myself to do nothing. I don’t do this every week, but I think a day of complete rest is really important and a nice little indulgence. I usually go without makeup, especially if I’m spending the day at home, but I never skip my weekly Sunday mask. I’m currently obsessed with the show Now and Here on HBO, so on Sunday evenings, I’ll do a mask while watching the show. I also love using my essential oil diffuser with lavender and eucalyptus during this time. It sets the mood for a calm evening and seems to send a signal to my brain that it’s time to chill out. My goal is to set my intentions for the week and make sure I’m mentally prepared. Sunday nights are my time to unwind and just enjoy a little “me” time.

I’m addicted to candles. I remember when I was in college, making minimum wage, I would save all my money for Diptyque candles. They were a total splurge, but my home just had to smell good! I usually light Figuier or Baies, sometimes both if I’m feeling fancy. If it’s a day where I’m spending hours in front of my computer screen, I’ll put on a playlist that usually includes Big Thief or Kevin Morby. I think there’s always this little bit of the Sunday night blues because reality sets in that the weekend is almost over, but my Sunday night beauty ritual helps me relax so I’m ready to get back to work the next day.

The Routine

My skin is like an emotional teenager. Some days she is sweet and lovely to be around, others she is testy and rude. It literally changes from clear and hydrated one week to dry with tons of breakouts the next week. Usually Sundays are the days I give my skin the most love because that’s when I generally have the most time. I remove my makeup and then cleanse with REN ClearCalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser. I also LOVE pure tea tree oil for breakouts; I usually dilute it a little with water and use a cotton swab to apply it directly on any blemishes. I recently started using a jade roller and I’m obsessed. I keep mine in the refrigerator so it’s cooling and refreshing anytime I use it.

I’m big on masks. I really like using a hydrating sheet mask like Patchology FlashMasque Hydrate, or if my skin needs a detox from too much weekend fun, I’ll put on REN’s Evercalm Rescue Mask. If I’m feeling dry, I’ll press on Hourglass’s No. 28 Primer Serum. I love how I can use that product before makeup or in my nightly routine. I also religiously use Hourglass’s No. 28 Lip Oil Treatment. It’s fun to experiment and try different brands, but my testy skin can freak out when I try too many new things at once. If I’m interested in trying out new products, I’ll usually have to incorporate them one at a time into my routine.

I’m a shower person, hands down. I don’t take baths because I’d never get out! I live and die by coconut oil and then if I’m extra dry, I’ll add some lotion on afterwards. This might be weird, but I also put deodorant on before bed. I love the one by Malin + Goetz. I love Oribe’s Beautiful Colour range and I love Living Proof’s PhD Dry Shampoo. My hair is dark and this is the only one I can use that doesn’t leave a white residue. Plus I’m obsessed with the fresh scent. I’m so basic when it comes to styling. I was given one talent in the beauty world and that was makeup. I’m lucky if I blow dry my hair, but I do love a good hair oil. I just started using the Ouai Hair Oil. I’ll use a bit of it in my hair and brush it out with my Tangle Teezer. Most of my job entails me being on social media so I’ve gotten really good at multitasking [especially when it comes to beauty]. I’ve mastered how to watch a show or listen to music while checking the ‘gram and sending ridiculous memes to friends.

Bedtime

I try to be under the covers cuddling my dog by 9pm. The way bedtime plays out varies. Sometimes I go down the YouTube rabbit hole and end up watching videos until midnight. Other times, I read a book and can fall asleep at a decent hour. I recently started using a sleep spray on my pillows before going to bed and now I’m officially addicted to it. I’m a light sleeper so I use ear plugs every night and I’d say I need a solid 8 hours. Honestly, 9 or 10 would be ideal in my mind though.

Monday Morning

My alarm is set for 6am on a Monday morning. I’m a hard snoozer. I have gotten into the terrible habit of snoozing for an hour! My poor dog probably hates me because my alarm is obnoxious, but necessary. I once made the mistake of having a sweet and soft alarm and slept through it too many times! Generally I feel ready to get back to work and tackle any shoots and projects I have lined up. The first things I do when I wake up are kiss my pup, wash my face and put on sunscreen. I’m terrified of sunspots and just sun damage in general so SPF is a must, especially before I take my dog out for her morning walk.
