As a contributing editor to Harper’s Bazaar US and one of Instagram’s most stylish content creators, Chrissy Rutherford keeps abreast of the trends. While she might update her wardrobe and tailor her content from Millennial pink to little house on the prairie chic, there is one thing that remains consistent: her eye makeup.

Having mastered the art of the perfect cat’s eye, Chrissy shares her trick for ensuring both sides look equal and reveals the essentials you need to recreate a graphic eyeliner look at home.

The Perfect Base For Liner

I’m a novice when it comes to eyeshadow, but I’ve been trying to get a little more familiar with it. I’ll put a very natural, dark brown shadow that’s a bit deeper than my natural skin tone on my lids before I go in with the liner. It creates a smooth base and helps my liner last for longer.

A Good Liquid Liner Is Essential

I’m very particular about my liquid eyeliners because I’ve been wearing a cat eye for well over a decade now. I can tell by the first stroke whether the product is going to apply well or not. Nothing frustrates me more than a liner that comes out streaky or is just too dry, but at the same time you don’t want it to be too runny. Eyeko Black Magic Liquid Eyeliner and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner are my go-to’s.

Tweezers Can Come In Handy

Day-to-day I draw my flick freehand. For special occasions or when I really want to get it right, I use the flat end of a tweezer to help draw it on straight. I usually follow the curve from the corner of my bottom lid, and draw upwards towards the end of my eyebrow. Also, don’t pull on your eyelid while doing your liner!

Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment With Colour

A few years ago my former colleague and Harpersbazaar.com’s Beauty Director gave me a yellow liner. I loved wearing that colour, especially because it matched a yellow coat that I’m quite fond of. They were a perfect match. I also love cobalt blue mascara, inspired by the Stella McCartney Fall 2012 show. Normally runway beauty looks sort of go over my head, but that one has always stuck with me.

Play Around With Your Cat Flick

I’ll play around with the size of the cat eye, so sometimes I’ll draw a bigger flick for a night out when I want it to be more noticeable and catty. Also, I’ll add a little gold or silver shimmer to the inner corners of my eyes (especially when tired, it makes you look more awake).

Always Finish With Mascara

Whether I’m wearing black liner, a pop of colour or a touch of sparkle, I always finish my look with lashing of mascara. Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes Mascara Volume 2 to be precise.
