At-Home Shower Spa

At-home shower spa

During busy periods there is nothing that we dream of more than a day of escapism at the spa. The joys of being swaddled in fluffy white robes, surrendering to the sensations of luxurious treatments and taking precious time out from a packed schedule. While most of us don’t visit the spa as often as we’d like, with a little preparation you can create your own spa-inspired experience at-home. Best of all, you don’t need to leave the house to enjoy its benefits and it’s a whole lot friendlier on your purse. The only pre-requisite? A shower and thirty minutes out of your diary ring-fenced for some serious TLC. Keep reading for our step-by-step guide…

Step 1: Create Your Perfect Spa Scene

Atmosphere is one of the most important factors to consider when creating your own at-home in-shower spa experience. Your bathroom may be smaller than you’d like, laden with products, or you may have been planning to renovate it for the best part of five years but with a little effort you can still make it wonderfully relaxing and instil some seriously chill vibes. Think: music, scent and light.

Dim lighting instantly signals to our brain that it’s time to relax. Try lighting candles like Jo Loves’ much-loved Pomelo candle for a fresh and zesty scent or why not try a spritz or two of Diptyque’s earthy Ambre Room Spray to get you in the mood. If you’ve got an in-shower speaker power it up or re-position your regular speaker or phone near the bathroom door and browse Spotify’s Spa Music playlists to help encourage a zen state.

Step 2: At-Home Aromatherapy

The biggest in-shower trend we’re loving at the moment is creating your own DIY eucalyptus shower head, plus it’s one of the most powerful and unique ways to incorporate the heavenly scent into your at-home spa experience too. Simply pick up a handful of eucalyptus stems from your local flower market or florist and gently crush the leaves first with a rolling pin or your hands to bruise them and allow the essential oils to begin to be released.

Next use a length of twine or string to attach it to the top of your shower just above the head. In this position the steam and water vapour from the shower drift upwards and mingle with the natural oils, helping to circulate the invigorating scent around you. To super-charge your sensory experience, add a couple of drops of Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil to the bottom of your shower basin and let the scent float upwards around you. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to induce feelings of relaxation.

Step 3: At-Home Body Scrub

Now you’ve set the mood, it’s time to embark on your at-home treatment regime. Before you turn on the water, stand in the shower basin and start by vigorously dry body brushing with Aromatherapy Associates Body Polish Brush. Using long sweeping movements start at your ankles and work your way up to help stimulate lymphatic drainage and boost circulation.

Next, turn on your shower letting the heat and steam rise and take a few moments to enjoy the concoction of scents. Using your hands massage in Ren’s Morrocan Rose Otto Body Polish to help slough off dead skin. Combining extracts of rose otto oil with almond oil and stimulating caffeine, take time to scrub each part of your body, revealing the smoother and softer skin beneath.

Step 4: At-Home Body Mask

All of our favourite spa treatments involve time sitting back with a rich, pampering wrap or mask in place. The same goes for our at-home version. Softening and smoothing, Sol de Janeiro’s moisturising blend of cupuacu butter, coconut and acai oils in its Brazilian Body Buff intensely hydrate and protect against free radical damage. Ideally, you’d leave this multi-tasking scrub and mask on for five to ten minutes until it dries down, taking some quiet time to enjoy your spa-like surrounds, but if you’re anything like us and start feeling twitchy after a couple of minutes, your skin will still reap the benefits.

Step 5: At-Home Invigorating Cleanse

Having let the warm water gently wash away your mask, it’s time to properly cleanse your body and remove any remnants of the products you’ve used so far. Cowshed’s Relax Calming Bath and Shower Gel is formulated with eucalyptus and lavender essential oils that will perfectly compliment your newly fashioned eucalyptus shower head. The gel formula creates a gentle lather that effectively cleanses the skin and will help you slip into a deeper state of relaxation thanks to its calming lavender extracts.

Now, with your skin feeling softer, smoother and fresher it’s time to draw your at-home spa shower to a close. We love wrapping our freshly washed hair up in an Aquis Hair Towel Turban for effortless drying, plus it also has the benefit of tucking hair safely away for the final ritual of your at-home spa experience.

Step 6: At-Home Intense Hydration

A luxurious oil is the perfect way to finish your at-home spa ritual. We love Susanne Kaufmann’s Body Oil that can be applied directly to damp skin. This helps to aid absorption as it creates a water-oil emulsion that sinks in quickly. Infused with rosehip and marigold oils alongside calming St John’s Wort, skin is left feeling silky-soft and velvety afterwards. Finally, snuggle up in your fluffiest towel, comfiest bed socks and congratulate yourself that you’ve managed to take a whole half an hour out of your day for some much-needed self-care.

We’ve booked our next evening in the diary already.
