Makeup For The Gym

It’s the age-old debate for beauty-loving workout enthusiasts: makeup or no makeup at the gym? While it’s best to go barefaced, a little layer of product can help you save face in your spin class…

Keep it breathable and sweat-proof

When it comes to base, there are a couple of key rules to adhere to. First, choose products that still allow your skin to breathe and aren’t too heavy. If you’re looking to keep things simple, the By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder is perfect as it boosts the hydration and luminosity of the skin while keeping exercise-induced shine at bay. Alternatively, use a concealer rather than an all-over formula and apply only where needed. Try Kevyn Aucoin’s Etherealist Super Natural Concealer, which is light yet buildable. If you feel you need a little more coverage, reach for a waterproof (i.e. sweat-proof) formula, such as Shiseido’s Wetforce Sports BB Cream SPF 50. Set your base with the Coola Makeup Setting Spray for extra longevity.

Less is more

Follow a three-step mantra when it comes to gym makeup: base, blush, brows. The three b’s ensure a natural, glossy finish which will help you feel put together, but still look understated. With base covered already, blusher should be light and ideally in a cream-gel formula which sinks into the skin and won’t run if you perspire. We recommend patting a little of Perricone MD’s No Blush Blush onto the apples of the cheeks for the ultimate subtle glow. Next, run some eyebrow gel through your brows to add a little shape and structure to the face. We like Eyeko’s Brow Gel for a perfectly defined arch.

Don’t forget the aftercare

A gym workout guarantees a build-up of sweat and oil which can be damaging to the skin’s overall condition if not removed shortly afterwards. To ensure you effectively remove your makeup and wash off excess dirt following exercise, a double cleanse is crucial. Start with a balm cleanser such as Eve Lom’s Gel Balm Formula, and follow this up with Sunday Riley’s Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser, which ensures a secondary deep clean and leaves skin soft, not stripped. Finish with a gel-based, oil-free cream such as Dr Dennis Gross’ Hyaluronic Marine Oil-Free Moisture Cushion.
