Mastering A Full Coverage Finish

We all need a full coverage complexion finish from time-to-time. Whether you’re attending a special evening event such as a party or wedding where long-wear is crucial, or full coverage is just your preferred finish in general, there are certain rules to follow to ensure you always perfect a full coverage finish…

Prep Your Skin

A long-lasting, full coverage makeup look begins with properly prepping the skin so that it’s clean, healthy and even, meaning makeup stays put, doesn’t cake and looks flawless. Begin by giving your face a thorough cleanse with a wash that uses AHAs to deeply clean and give skin a lit-from-within glow; we like Dr Dennis Gross’ Alpha Beta Pore Perfecting Cleansing Gel. Follow by layering a cotton pad with a brightening toner like the La Mer The Brilliance Brightening Lotion Intense, which contains the brand’s eponymous Miracle Broth to sooth, nourish and protect.

Next, opt for a glow-enhancing serum and moisturiser to finish; this emphasis on hydration and radiance-boosting in your routine will ensure skin is plumped and nourished. Many full-coverage formulas do not settle well on dry, flaky or dull skin and tend to look a little one-dimensional, so this is an important step. Try using the This Works Energy Bank Skin Glow Serum, followed by Glamglow’s Waterburst Moisturiser for an optimum dewy makeup base.

Consider Your Skin Type

Not all full-coverage foundation formulas are created equal; nor are they always designed to suit every skin type. While dry skins should try a more luminous product, oilier complexions are best with oil-free or matte formulas. Read on to discover which long-lasting foundations are best for you…

For dry skin:

Dry skin runs the risk of feeling weighed down and flaky with heavy, full finishes, which is why you should pick something that offers the coverage but feels lightweight and is glow-boosting. The Becca Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation is a water-rich formula that reflects light beautifully; we recommend applying it with a damp Beautyblender for the best effect. Alternatively, By Terry’s Terrybly Densiliss Foundation is designed for more mature complexions, which usually suffer from dryness due to lack of collagen and elasticity. This formula will leave skin looking airbrushed yet feels as light-as-air.

For oily skin:

The main concern for oily skin is longevity; no matter how full coverage your foundation is, if you don’t choose an appropriate formula, your makeup could be sliding down your face come lunchtime. We love the oil-free gel texture of Chantecaille’s Future Skin Foundation, which provides complete coverage that stays put, but isn’t too matte in finish. If you prefer something more matte, we recommend Hourglass’ Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation, which uses kaolinite mineral clay to absorb excess oil.

For normal skin:

Normal skin can play around with all kinds of formulas and it really depends what your preference is in terms of feel and texture. Two full coverage bases that never seem to disappoint are Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation, (which is water, sweat and humidity-resistant and creates a velvety finish) and Hourglass’ Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation, is a stick that gives a buildable, modern-matte finish that stands the test of time.

Conceal And Set

One of the most important tips to remember for a full coverage finish? Always remember to set your base. After applying your chosen foundation, layer concealer onto any redness, blemishes or dark circles before setting with a long-lasting loose powder for a flawless complexion.

The new Hourglass Veil Transluscent Setting Powder feels lightweight yet sets makeup in an instant. For a doubly-protected look, finish with a setting spray; the Cover FX High Performance Setting Spray locks in makeup for 16 hours without feeling drying or sticky.
