Party Makeup Like A Pro

Party season is now well underway, which means a diary packed to bursting with reunions with old friends, celebratory meals and festive frivolity. If your skin is looking less than its best due to a rather indulgent new mulled wine habit and you can’t remember the last time you had a full eight hours – don’t panic. We’ve spoken to two professional makeup artists to get their top tips for perfecting party makeup fast. Because what else is good makeup for, if not for disguising a multitude of party season related sins?

The Quickest Way To Take Your Look From Day To Night…

Forget having to take your makeup off and starting from scratch, there is one simple and easy update that take a matter of moments to perfect, that will instantly elevate your entire look. “Lipstick!” says Arif Khan, Space NK Pro Artist. “It might seem obvious but even a complimentary lipstick shade will add some colour to a tired complexion. When you’re in a rush your lipstick can double up as a blusher too. Using the pads of your fingers, pat the lipstick pigment into your cheeks and suddenly you have a cool monochromatic look. Simple!”

“A coloured gel liner like the NARS Longwear Eyeliner can transform your eye makeup look fast. Sweep the liner along the lash line and the outer corner of the eye and diffuse out using your finger or a fluffy brush for a smokey effect,” says NARS‘ Senior Artist Rebecca Moore.

A Party Season Lipstick Trend To Try…

“If you want to try something a little different why not experiment with an ombre lip? Dab a bold pop of colour into the centre of your lips and a blend a darker pencil out around the edges to create a subtle tonal variation,” says Arif.

“A nude lipstick is always a winner but if you want colour that’s a little different I love a dark plum or berry tone,” says Rebecca.

Making A Party Season Makeup Statement…

“If you’re the type of person who wears a bright red lipstick to the office, you could make a statement by wearing a nude. As cliché as it sounds, think about your usual style and what you could switch up for party season,” says Rebecca.

How To Keep Your Lipstick In Place All Night Long…

High maintenance lipstick is out of the question. With a night of fun ahead in store you don’t want to have even think about your makeup once you have applied it. Thankfully, you can wear lipstick that will look as great at the end of your night as it did at the beginning.

“First of all colour your entire lip with a pencil like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, then add your lipstick on top and set your entire lip with setting powder and then reapply your lipstick. This technique really helps to bind all your lip products together for a long-lasting result,” says Rebecca.

“For bulletproof lipstick it’s all about the prep. My top tips would be to start with a matte treatment such as Veneffect Anti-Ageing Lip or Fresh Sugar Lip Polish and then follow with a thin layer of eyeshadow primer as this will help to grip your liner and lipstick. Keep in mind that matte formulas always last longer than glosses and once you’ve applied one layer of lipstick, blot with a tissue and then reapply a second coat,” says Arif.

Why Blusher Is A Clutch Bag Essential…

Nothing perks up a partied-out complexion like a dust dusting of a punch blush over the apples of your cheeks. “Powder blusher can be applied easily without disturbing your base makeup, which makes it one of the easiest ways to pep up dull skin. Perfect for refreshing your makeup look ahead of the office party when you’re already wearing makeup, powder blushers are usually slimmer than a stick or cream too so fit easily into your handbag,” says Arif.

The Game-Changing Tip For Perfect Party Lashes…

“Keep the wand of your old mascara and give it a good clean to remove any old product and stash it away because this is your best tool for perfect lashes and brows. If you’re going out in the evening and are already wearing mascara, simply comb through your lashes with the old wand to smooth and remove any clumps before layering on fresh mascara. This tip means you can amplify your lashes for a fuller finish at night but they won’t look clumpy,” says Rebecca.
