Personalising Your Skin Routine

1400x1000

Discover how to build your own personalised routine to suit your skin’s needs followed our step-by-step guide that will help you understand your skin type, identify your main concern and then build your regime product by product.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Identifying your skin type is the first step in personalising your skincare routine to make it work best for you. The main skin types are sensitive, dry, oily, combination and normal. It’s fairly common to recognise characteristics of multiple skin types on different parts of your face so try conducting a consultation of your own by asking yourself which type you match most closely. Oily skin is prone to breakouts and is likely to suffer from that pesky 4pm shine while in contrast dry skin may feel uncomfortable, tight or even look flaky. Normal skin feels nicely nourished and in balance, while combination skin has characteristics of both oiliness and dryness. If redness, inflammation and skin that’s highly reactive sounds like you, it’s likely you’re a sensitive type. Still not sure? Delve deeper with our Understanding Your Skin Type Guide for further information.

What’s Your Main Skin Concern?

From radiance-boosting to unifying uneven tone and smoothing to blemish busting, whatever your concern there is a product to help. For most of us, our skin reacts to seasonal changes such as the weather and environmental factors including stress, diet and pollution and, as a result, your primary skin concern is likely to change several times during the course of the year. For this reason, it’s a good idea to refresh and reset your routine seasonally. Once you’ve identified your skin type and pinpointed your main concern, it’s time to start building your personalised routine.

Consider Key Ingredients

Before you start, take the chance to brush up on the hero ingredients in our in-depth guides which include brightening vitamin C, vitamin F, copper peptides, magnesium, hydrating hyaluronic acid and exfoliating acids.

Build Your Routine: Cleanser

We recommend building your own routine in the order of application. When it comes to cleansing, there myriad formulas to suit every skin type from oils and balms to foaming, milky creams. For dry skin sufferers, Emma Hardie’s soothing Moringa Cleansing Balm contains vitamin E and leaves skin feeling dewy and plump while sensitive types may like Caudalie’s Instant Foaming Cleanser that contains extracts of calming sage, chamomile and grape. For those with oily skin we swear by Kate Somerville’s Detox Daily Cleanser that uses a trio of acids to help exfoliate skin and whisk away dirt and grime.

Build Your Routine: Masks

Incorporating a mask only adds a couple of minutes to your routine and you can leave most on overnight; just try using one as a weekly booster. To deeply cleanse skin, Fresh Beauty’s Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask helps mop up excess oil and release grime from pores or for a quick hydration hit we love Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis 3D Moisture Infusion Mask a bio-cellulose sheet mask that contains hyaluronic acid with rose water and works perfectly before makeup prep.

Build Your Routine: Serum

Serums are one of the most effective ways to treat your skin and get to the root of targeted concerns, thanks to the higher concentrations of active ingredients which are able to penetrate deeply. An international bestseller and a new launch on our shelves, Vintner’s Daughter’s Active Botanical Serum contains a unique blend of 22 oils including avocado, neroli and sea buckthorn to help replenish and nourish dry and sensitive skin. Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum is infused with virgin marula oil, vitamin C and liquorice extract to restore radiance.

Build Your Routine: Moisturiser

Crucial for all skin types, including oily skin, a good moisturiser helps lock in hydration and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Two of our favourites include Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream, which is infused with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and E, shea butter, rosehip oil, and Darphin’s Intral Soothing Moisturiser that contains chamomile, hawthorn and vitamin E extract to help soothe irritated skin.

Build Your Routine: Eye Cream

The skin surrounding your eyes is up to 40% thinner than on other areas of your face, which is why we recommend a cream or balm tailored to the delicate area. Fresh Beauty’s Hydrating Eye Gel Cream combines cooling cucumber, rosewater and hyaluronic acid to pep up and illuminate the undereye area. If you suffer from puffiness, look out for stimulating caffeine-infused cream like 111SKIN’s Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel to help smooth and de-puff.
