Christmas party season is the perfect excuse to step outside of your comfort zone and have some fun with your makeup. If you’re not usually one to rock a bold red lip or adorn your lids with smoked-out eyeshadow or a swoosh of glitter, then now’s the time. “I think people generally lean towards sparkle and glitter for Christmas parties and I always love a bold lip with multi-dimensional, jewel-toned eyes with a gilded, glittery finish and too much mascara,” says Andrew Gallimore, UK Makeup Ambassador for Nars. To get your party season off to a sparkly start, we caught up with him to find out how to create the ultimate party look.

The New Smoky Eye
An eyeshadow primer is always a smart idea when creating a full-on eye look, as it helps powder to adhere to the skin and prevents it from smudging, slipping or creasing; Nars Tinted Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is particularly good as it neutralises any discolouration and masks imperfections. Apply to the centre of the eyelid and blend out across the socket using your finger. Don’t be afraid to layer eyes with multiple jewel tones. Look for shades that complement each other and place the lightest shade at the inner corner of your eye and work out to the darker tone. For this look, Andrew pressed Nars Eye Shadow in Pattaya – an iridescent pink shade – into the inner corner of the eye and used a soft fluffy blending brush to blend out, finishing directly above the iris.
Next, using a clean brush, sweep Nars Eye Shadow in Goa – a sea green tone – over the outermost half of the lid and towards the outer corner of the eye then blend seamlessly into the crease. For definition and to anchor the paler shades, add Nars Eye Shadow in Big Sur a deep blue tone down around your lower lash line and buff in with Nars Smudge Brush #45.
To warm up your complexion and create an all-over healthy looking glow, buff Nars Laguna Liquid Bronzer into the high planes of the face using Nars Wet/Dry Blush Brush #23 – take care to melt the colour into your hairline and down around your jaw area. To bring skin to life, add a subtle highlight to cheeks with the Nars Capri Highlighter from the Little Fetishes Duo and blend into skin using Nars Kabuki Artisan Yachiyo Brush.
Party season allows you to break the rules, so don’t be afraid to work a bold lip with a statement eye. Start by pressing Nars Powermatte Lip Luster in Combat – a rich plum tone – into the cupid’s bow in an X shape, then gently press the top and bottom lip together to distribute the lipstick evenly. Using the tip of the doe-foot applicator, outline the upper and lower lip before filling the colour in.
The fluid formula will dry down to give a full coverage, matte finish and to prevent lipstick from transferring onto your teeth, place you index finger into your mouth and then pull it out. “I really love Nars Powermatte Lip Lusters, they have a metallic finish that will last all night,” says Andrew.
Whether you’re at casual Christmas drinks or dancing till dawn, you’ll undoubtedly need to refresh your look during the festivities. We asked Andrew for his go-to touch-up tips and the must-have products to keep in your clutch for when you’re fully embracing the spirit of the season.
“The travel-size Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer is perfect for on the go touch-ups. Its wand applicator allows for utmost precision for under-eye or blemish concealing and its elastic formula means it’s easy to blend into skin using just fingers.”
“Also, don’t forget the key item you’ve used for that night’s makeup. These are the things which wear off and need replacing the most. To minimise wear-off, stick to longwear products, like Powermatte Lip Lusters, Larger Than Life Longwear Eye Pencils and Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation…all of which will help your look last the night.”
