Beauty Tips From My Mother

Growing up can be tough, especially when it comes to navigating the confusing world of beauty, which is why mums are often a great reference point. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we chatted to five industry experts to find out about the valuable beauty lessons they have inherited from their mums over the years.

Mathilde Thomas
Founder of Caudalie

“My mother taught me that the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your own skin. When I was little, I used to look at my mum when she was applying her creams and makeup and I always tried to copy her. Her beauty advice was to keep it simple but consistent: use a product to encourage lashes to grow, always use an eyelash curler before applying mascara, a bit of natural gloss and always use products to achieve glossy hair. She also taught me how remarkable antioxidants can be for the skin, how important it is to remove your makeup before going to sleep, to protect your skin

from sun damage, to try to keep a healthy and well-balanced life and most importantly, to drink a delicious glass of red wine every day! I still follow this advice in my daily life because… it works!”

Arabella Preston
Founder of Votary

“My mum was a proper swinging 60s London chick, silver leather mini dresses, beehives and stacked heels (which she marvellously and unceremoniously filled our dressing up box with 20 years later). But as I knew her, as my mum, she had moved to rural Shropshire and was living the countryside dream, building a garden and living in dungarees and no makeup. I haven’t thought about it until now, but I suppose that has impressed upon me a similarly matter-of-fact approach to beauty.

Be who you want, when you want. Enjoy the fun and frippery if it pleases you, or have a day when it doesn’t occur to you to even put mascara on. It’s freedom I suppose. My mum is just the coolest (doesn’t everyone say that though?)”

Anita Kaushal
Founder of Mauli

“I remember my mother’s timeless elegance and fuss-free beauty rituals and it’s taught me to use fewer, but better things. As a mother of seven, she needed to keep her rituals simple but I suspect that’s just how she liked to be. Her friends called her a ‘Burmese doll’ as she was petite, with a bright face, big, enviable cheekbones and the most radiant smile. She would spritz her face with pure rose water, followed by a moisturiser of organic almond oil infused with a hint of saffron, turmeric, rose and sandalwood.

She inspired my love of oils, and I’ve taken that love and poured it into Mauli. With a few drops of oil on her face, and her hair in a bun, she would add a dash of lipstick and be good to go.”

“My mother has always instilled in me a very natural approach to beauty in every way – from using botanical pure ingredients to the final makeup look. She has always had a passion for flowers and gardening and used makeup as a way to enhance her natural beauty.” Olivia Chantecaille

“My mother always reminded me that I am beautiful – inside and out.  She made sure to give me a positive inner voice, and raised me to be very confident. When I was younger, I always loved sneaking little drops of her favourite fragrance, Robert Piguet Fracas, and dabbing it onto my wrist.

I think it went unnoticed…or perhaps allowed, until one day I accidentally spilled the precious little black and pink bottle all over the bathroom floor. But all she said when she found me in her bathroom, frantically cleaning up the pungent freesia scent was “Oh what a lovely fracas (melee)”. Alex Chantecialle
