Weekday wakeups can be tough enough to deal with, without dark October mornings making them harder. To help ease your transition from duvet to desk this winter, we’ve compiled a get up and glow guide.
Rise and Shine
An energising cleanser loaded with antioxidants and vitamins is the perfect way to wake your skin up, no matter how early the hour. Wash away last night’s build of sweat and grime with a refreshing gel cleanser massaged straight into dry skin. Take a few minutes to apply pressure around the temples, across the brow bone and along the jawline to stimulate blood flow, boost circulation and give you a natural glow.
We love This Works Light Time Cleanse & Glow because it’s packed with brightening actives such as jojoba and vitamin C, making it a great daily skin illuminator; apply after showering and leave on while you brush your teeth and dry off. Oskia’s Renaissance Cleansing Gel is another favourite, which uses pumpkin enzymes to gently exfoliate, remove dull skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion.
Break It Down
During the winter months our cell turnover is slower which means a build-up of dead skin cells lie on the skin’s surface. As a result complexions appear dull and lacklustre. Cue chemical exfoliation in the form of alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic and lactic acid, which work on the surface of the skin to break the bonds that allow dull, dead skin to cling on. For a quick solution that can be done even by the most bleary-eyed, sweep cleansed skin with Sarah Chapman’s Liquid Facial Resurfacer or Malin + Goetz’s Resurfacing Glycolic Pads before applying your usual skincare products. Both are effective ways to incorporate exfoliation into your routine and will ensure the next steps in your routine are even more effective.
When you’re short on time, you need products that deliver. Brightening serums are a sure fire way to increase skin’s luminosity as they contain a high concentration of active ingredients that sink deep down into skin fast. Look for serums that help boost oxygen intake such as Oskia’s Get Up & Glow energy booster, which works to recharge cell energy and increase the cells’ levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
The right application is another way to ensure skin is adequately detoxified and vitality is increased; simply use your fingertips to gently tap the product in all over your face for a minute or two with an equal, even pressure. Not only will it help the serum sink in, it also increases microcirculation and brings more oxygen to the cells. For another quick fix, try supercharging your existing skincare with concentrated brightening formulas, such Odacite’s wild carrot concentrate. Simply mix two drops into your usual moisturiser or wear alone for a more intensive treatment.
There’s more than one way to create a faux glow at 5, 6 or 7am. To create that lauded lit-from-within look begin by prepping skin with an illuminating primer before you start your makeup. Look out for formulas that contain mica – a mineral glimmer – and crushed pearl, as both work to reflect light and give the illusion of a healthy glow. Apply underneath foundation as a base or pat over the top of makeup to reawaken radiance throughout the day. For the best brightening effect, apply to the highest points of your face where the light would naturally hit, so the forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow, and dial up or down depending on the level of glow your morning requires…
Dark circles are the hallmark of sallow, wintry skin. Combat yours with peachy pink pigments like Becca’s Under Eye Brightening Corrector, which helps to neutralise the blue-purple tones thanks to ultra-fine pearlescent particles, which scatter light and gently illuminate. Pat on gently with your ring finger and allow it to melt onto skin, blending out for a soft-focus effect. Wear it under concealer for an ultra-backlit effect or tap over your concealer for a subtle highlight.
