After realising they were ‘throwing away the treasures’ of their 78-hectare vineyard, Mathilde Thomas and her husband created Caudalie – an all-natural skincare brand that harnesses the anti-ageing properties of the resveratrol-rich grapes left over from harvest. Starting out in 1995 with two creams and a dietary supplement, Caudalie has come a long way and this January marks the exclusive Space NK launch of Premier Cru The Serum – the latest addition to the Premier Cru Collection. We visited Les Sources de Caudalie in Bordeaux to follow the story of The Serum, from vine to shelf.
In The Beginning…
It was Professor Joseph Vercauteren, the world’s leading expert on polyphenols (the anti-ageing compound found in grapes) who first advised Mathilde and her husband Bertrand that the leftover grapes and vines from the harvest were destined for better things. Together with a team of scientists, Professor Vercauteren developed Caudalie’s powerful anti-ageing ingredients including antioxidant-rich grapeseed polyphenols, vine resveratrol to plump and firm the epidermis, and Viniferine (Caudalie’s own brightening complex) to even the skin tone.
The Premier Cru collection, featuring all of the Caudalie patents mentioned above, has been recognised as the epitome of anti-ageing for the past nine years, however with five years’ further research and 39 formulations later, Caudalie has now extended its range to include Premier Cru The Serum.
The Crème de la Crème
As we age our cells produce less energy and the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid (all the heroes that keeps skin looking plump and dewy) slows down. Luckily for us, genetics specialist Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School has spent the past five years in partnership with Caudalie researching anti-ageing innovations and together they have discovered Vinergy®.
The Award-winning Formula
What sets this formula apart is Vinergy®’s ability to slow the natural ageing process of the skin down by substantially restoring its energy capacity. In other words, it boosts skin’s cellular renewal, helping it to act and look younger. This new complex is a combination of the brand’s signature Vine Resveratrol and Betaine (an anti-ageing molecule derived from sugar beet) and works to firm, protect and soothe skin while also improving its ability to retain its moisture. Thanks to its particular formulation, the The Serum is the only product in the Premier Cru collection to contain this new patented technology.
The ultimate skincare sidekick, Vinergy® could only fulfil its potential to boost other skincare products once contained inside a lightweight, watery texture that could penetrate deep down into the skin. It makes perfect sense therefore to place Vinergy® in The Serum – the first and most effective step in a skincare routine. And what of its unique, water-gel texture? Another personal project of Caudalie Founder Mathilde Thomas, who, having lived in Asia for the past two years, was hugely inspired by Asian beauty and developed a particular love of water-like serums. “Korean women are renowned for layering many different skincare products, such as cleansers, toners, waters, essences pre-serums, serums, moisturisers and SPF” explains Mathilde.
“I have become obsessed with ultra lightweight serums that smooth, moisturise and re-plump skin.” Perfect for even sensitive skin, The Serum contains 95% natural origin ingredients and is subtly scented with rose petals infused in an oak barrel, another nod to its unique heritage.
Housed in a golden pink, grape shaped bottle that’s made for showing off in your bathroom cabinet, The Serum should be applied to the face, neck and décolleté every morning and evening after cleansing.
For best results, try layering The Serum with Premier Cru The Cream – a combination that’s been clinically proven to be seven times more effective against fine lines and the signs of ageing than using just the cream alone.
To stimulate the skin and help increase the product’s efficacy, try gently pressing the lightweight formula directly into skin using the tips of your fingers and tap.
