How To Use Hair Masks To Keep Your Hair Looking Salon Fresh

There has been a lot of chatter about how to colour and cut your hair at home recently. At the other end of the spectrum some people are avoiding the hassle altogether and going as far as to shave it all off. If you’re not keen on going to those lengths and don’t fancy your luck at DIY colour, it might be worth investing in a good quality conditioning hair mask. While this might sound like a bit of a stretch, hear us out. Not only does hydrated hair look healthier, a glossy shine will make your roots look less obvious. And, if you’re still not convinced, the NEW IGK Mixed Feelings Drops will ease any root-induced stress.

To help you achieve that salon fresh finish at home, we spoke to the experts and asked them for their top tip and product recommendations for the most common hair concerns affecting us all right now…

How To Smooth Frizz & Rehydrate Thick Hair…

Dry, dehydrated hair and frizz go hand in hand. A rich, moisturising hair mask, such as Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask can transform your hair after just one wash. “This mask is all about banishing dry brittle hair and adding very deep hydration using 98% natural ingredients and innovative haircare technology,” says Arif Khan, Space NK’s lead pro-artist. “It delivers targeted nutrients, including B vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, to where they’re needed in minutes.” Briogeo’s founder Nancy Twine designed the mask to be used on all hair types, including afro and thick hair. Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask With Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil is a firm favourite for smoothing frizz too.

Insider trick: If it’s tricky for you to leave the mask on for 30 minutes after shampooing, Mike Mahoney, director at Taylor Taylor has a tip that could be a little more convenient. “Try applying it directly onto dry hair and leave it on for twice as long to fully saturate your hair,” suggests Mike.

How To Revive Colour & Disguise Root Regrowth…

If you see your hair colourist every six to eight weeks, you might be starting to panic about your roots. Fortunately, IGK has come to the rescue with it’s new two step treatment. While Offline 3 Minute Hydration Hair Mask nourishes, the Mixed Feeling Toning Drops help to revive your hair colour – there is a formula for blondes and brunettes. “Whether your curls are feeling dehydrated or your color is looking dull, the Offline Mask deeply hydrates to ensure hair is more manageable, and colour is more vibrant,” says Franck Izquierdo, Co-Founder of IGK Hair. “Add a couple of drops of Mixed Feeling into the mask to eliminate brassiness and tone hair.”

Insider trick: If you’re desperate to disguise your roots for your next Skype call and don’t want to attempt a DIY at-home colour, it’s worth looking to your brow gel for assistance. While using your brow gel won’t eliminate roots entirely, it will make them look subtler.

How To Boost Volume & Condition Fine Hair…

Those with finer hair might look at hair masks as thick, weighty treatments that steal any hint of volume. But, there are plenty of clever formulas, including Oribe’s luxury Gold Lust Transformative Masque which strengthens, repairs and rehydrates without leaving even the finest of locks feeling limp. If you want to be extra cautious, look to Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner, which leaves you with that dreamy post-salon smoothness and scent.

If your hair is feeling particularly flat at the roots, it’s worth incorporating a scalp scrub, such as Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub, into your weekly, or fortnightly hair routine to improve your scalp’s circulation and gently slough away any product build-up.

Insider trick: “Don’t over saturate your hair with the mask and apply it from the mid-lengths to ends, avoiding your roots completely,” says Mike. Try combing the treatment down to your ends.

How To Enhance Shine & Nourish Dry Ends…

That post-salon glossy shine and weightlessness can be tricky to emulate at home. The trick is to keep hair hydrated and use a hair mask once a week religiously. It sounds obvious, but incorporating a mask into your regular routine will make a difference. To smooth split ends, look to Virtue Split End Serum, which lives up to its name smoothes down the cuticles. If you have thick, curly hair, Mike recommends enhancing your curly and disguising split ends by using a small amount of your hair mask. “Curl products can be sticky, hard or just generally leave your hair feeling heavy, while a mask is lighter and hydrates,” says Mike.

Insider trick: “Make sure that you rinse out thoroughly until the water is clear, and if you can handle it opt for a cold rinse as this helps to boost shine,” says Roi Nadin, head stylist at Josh Wood.

A Final Expert Tip To Consider…

“Why not take this time to give your hair a well-earned rest, try not to use too much heat and if possible let your hair air dry after its washed,” says top style director, Jack Merrick Thirlway. “Use this time while we’re in lockdown to treat your hair with a little extra TLC with great products and embrace your natural texture.”
