The big blue ocean; it’s full of mystery and intrigue and is also brimming with a wealth of natural ingredients rich in skin-loving vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Read on as we take a deep dive into the best marine-infused ingredients as well as the beauty haul you need for a more radiant complexion.

While you might not consider covering yourself in this slimy, green marine plant, you probably should because it’s packed with powerful anti-ageing vitamins A, B, C, D and E, and thanks to anchoring its roots in mineral-rich seawater, boasts a high level of magnesium and potassium, both of which have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. Max Huber, the brains behind super luxe skincare brand La Mer recognised the healing, skin regenerating properties associated with sea kelp and centered his entire brand around it.

Another super sea green, algae is recognised as a hydrating hero – it’s packed with humectants which work to hold in moisture and hydrate skin at a deeper level. Similar to seaweed, algae also contains a wealth of vitamins, in particular vitamin E which helps to strengthen and nourish the skin’s barrier. Its potency makes it an  effective ingredient for protecting skin from environmental aggressors and free radicals.

Sea salt

Naturally abrasive, sea salt is a common ingredient in body scrubs and thanks to its ability to gently slough away dead skin cells, exfoliates to reveal softer, smoother skin. Rich in magnesium and calcium, sea salt is also a natural detoxifier and works to draw toxins away, regulate fluid retention, reduce inflammation and boost lymphatic drainage. This is particularly useful for sporting injuries or pregnant women suffering from puffy legs or ankles. Magnesium is most easily absorbed through the skin’s surface, so try adding salts to a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes for the best effect.
