The frolics of New Year’s Eve leave little time for makeup checks; in fact, the best parties should make you forget you’re wearing it at all. The key therefore, lies in the preparation. Ensuring skin stays illuminated and flushed, and colour bold and gilded, here’s your hour-by-hour guide to getting ready.
Whether hunkering down in the village pub, or heading to a glitzy party, skin prep is paramount.
5pm: Exfoliating is the fastest route to radiant skin. Containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), chemical exfoliants resurface and brighten sun-starved, winter-weary skin. Try the gratifyingly tingly Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel, and follow with Omorovicza’s mineral-rich Moor Cream Cleanser. Finish with a blast of cold water to tighten pores.
6pm: A diamond infused face mask may seem superfluous, but Rodial Pink Diamond Lifting Face Mask has the excess of NYE written all over it. Best, it hugs the face snugly, meaning you can potter around while the peptides plump.
9pm: Lips: 111SKIN Meso Infusion Lip Mask & Plumping Duo is the next best thing to lip filler. As its name suggests, there are two formulas, one that coaxes a bee-stung mouth and another that nourishes it.
If you’re off to cocktails then opt for fail-safe impact and go for a heady red. Hourglass’ Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick in I Desire is light in texture and rich in colour. If it’s drinks at the pub then RMS Wild With Desire Lipstick in Russian Roulette is a buttery soft matte in deep claret.
Skin: “Concealer is key. Use the fluffiest brush you have, in order to achieve a flawless finish that won’t cake” says make-up artist Mary Greenwell, we find Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer doesn’t desert its station while Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector offers sheer, light-reflecting coverage.
Eyes: “They key with glitter is to not be too meticulous about it. If it falls onto the cheekbone, that’s fine – it needs to feel effortless,” says backstage regular Wendy Rowe. For a glitzy finish swipe Kevyn Aucoin The Loose Shimmer Shadow in Rose Quartz over lids – the roller ball dispenses a burnished, metallic wash, or get smudge-happy with Sisley’s Phyto-Eye Twist in Topaz. If you’re sticking to a smoky eye, try dabbing a smidge in the inner corner to make them pop.
11pm: At this stage, drink-soaked lips will need enlivening, brows brushing and skin refreshing. The latter is done best with highlighter, plus, it’s fool proof – even after a tipple or three. Gentle dabbing of CoverFX Custom Enhancer Drops on the top of cheekbones will make for a picture-perfect glow while Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder subtly glints in quiet light if you’re partying sans glitterball.
The morning after the night before…
Faces are first to exhibit stonking signs of a hangover. Start by removing any remnants of makeup with Caudalie’s Micellar Cleansing Water. After, enlist Sunday Riley’s C.E.O C + E antiOXIDANT Protect + Repair Moisturiser which works to hydrate and brighten drab complexions.
