Packing can prove problematic at the best of times, but compromising on your choice of makeup for a night out is to be avoided at all costs. To avoid a bulging bag (never a good look) and the heartache of losing your favourite lipstick somewhere between the cab and the club, see our tips for the products that make the clutch.
Less Is More
When it comes to product selection, be strict but also consider what you can do before leaving the house to give makeup the best possible chance of staying put. Always use a primer before applying foundation to ensure longevity, we suggest Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 and be sure to set makeup, using either a setting powder or fixing spray. Prevent lipstick from going patchy by prepping lips with a softening lip balm such as Omorovicza Perfecting Lip Balm and to avoid feathering, we swear by a liner. Eyeshadow is less likely to slip or shift when you prep lids with a specific primer like Laura Mercier Eye Basics and if you’re concerned about your fragrance fading, you can intensify by using an Eau de Parfum (a more concentrated formula) and layer with a scented body lotion in the same fragrance.
Practically Perfect In Every Way
Although it’s tempting to include your entire dressing table, it’s not exactly practical. Check if your favourite products come in travel-size (because many of them do!). Our go-to travel-friendly minis include, Cover FX Perfect Mattifying Prime & Set, Tangle Teezer Silver Starlet Compact Styler, Oribe Dry Texturzing Spray and Eyeko Black Magic Mascara. If you can’t find the pint-size version of your perfect product, look for ones that come in savvy packaging. We love the By Terry Expert collection, which features six products designed specifically to deliver a professional finish while on-the-go. Byredo’s innovative kabuki perfumes are a really clever way to carry fragrance with you on a night out; super slim, they slip into handbags and their powder formula means they won’t weigh you down.
When short on space, look for products that can be used in more than one way. We love Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick because not only is it super chic and comes high on our Best Looking Makeup poll, its sleek gold applicator provides the ultimate control and precision making it really easy to contour and define lips so you can leave liner at home. Lipsticks are also useful for multi-tasking — if you select the right shade, you can not only use on lips, but scribble onto eyelids as eyeshadow and press into cheeks for blusher or highlighter. An ultra blendable concealer is handy on a night out to help disguise blemishes and dark under eye circles, and to build up in layers in place of foundation.
Despite using a combination of the best primer and setting spray in town, it is likely that at some point towards the end of the evening your makeup will start to look a little tired. Eyeshadow sticks are a great way to correct wayward eye makeup; we love By Terry Ombre Blackstar for its creamy formula enriched with Tahitian black pearl extract and other anti-ageing ingredients which give a brilliant, glossy finish that is easy to smudge over existing eyeshadow or top up. The stick applicator makes it easy to use, even if you only have access to a handheld mirror. Nars Velvet Matte Foundation is a great option for perking up your complexion because its soft matte finish and creamy, blendable texture layers easily and the removable touch-up blender helps to create a professional, flawless finish in seconds.
