Turmeric

Thanks to its healing properties and zingy Instagram-friendly yellow shade, the turmeric latte is this year’s cult drink. But its anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting abilities extend to skincare too. “Tumeric is a miraculous adaptogen” explains Anita Kaushal, founder of British Ayuverdic beauty brand Mauli. “An adaptogen is a substance that adapts to whatever the body needs at any given time; when your skin is inflamed turmeric will soothe, when your body is stressed it will calm it. It intuitively knowns what you need and adapts to give you just that.” With that in mind, we’ll be turning to Mauli’s turmeric-rich Radiance Multi-Tasking Exfoliant & Mask whenever we’re out-foxed by skin that looks dull, feels tight or is breaking out.

Purslane

Used as a natural anti-inflammatory for over 2,000 years, purslane, a leafy green herb that’s actually considered a weed, is famed for its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, essential for good skin health. It’s also rich in the protective antioxidants that may help to prevent premature ageing, which explains why Dr Barbara Sturm chose it as the star of her eponymous range: “It stimulates the youth enzyme Telomerase which stops the length of the Telomere cap at the end of our DNA from shortening. The shortening of our Telomeres leads to cellular dysfunction and finally cell death which is ultimately the process behind the wear and tear of the skin and premature ageing.”
Try Dr Barbara Sturm’s Face Mask for an intensive boost of moisture, plus all the anti-ageing benefits of purslane.

Niacinamide

Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide helps to reduce inflammation in the body, so it’s an excellent ingredient for blemish-prone skin. It also helps to boost collagen production and encourages the body to produce ceramides (natural lipids that keep our skin plumped and hydrated) to form a protective barrier and prevent water loss. “Niacinamide is one of my all time favourites” says Oskia founder, Georgie Cleeve. “Used at the correct percentages it can reduce water loss, boost fatty acids and ceramides and stimulate new fibroblasts and collagen secretion.” It’s also a great ingredient if you have dry skin, or use irritation-inducing acids or retinol as it helps skin to become more resilient. To support your skin with a nourishing niacinamide boost every night, try Oskia’s Bedtime Beauty Boost.

Probiotics

Well-known as a superfood helping to support healthy digestion, probiotics also have myriad benefits for the skin, according to Claire Vero, Founder and CEO of Aurelia Probiotic Skincare “One of the main causes of premature skin ageing is inflammation. In fact, inflammation causes a number of skin concerns and stops the skin functioning optimally. Probiotic ingredients help cells to communicate better and reduce the inflammatory damage immune triggers cause, balancing the skin from within, maintaining equilibrium.” As well as a daily spoonful of bacteria boosting yoghurt, twice daily cleansing with Aurelia Probiotic Skincare’s Miracle Cleanser will transform skin, helping to balance and soothe.
