Superhero Moisturisers

Moisturiser is a mainstay step in every skincare regime. Packed with skin-friendly vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, moisturiser helps to maintain skin’s function, lock in hydration and prevent water loss. However, because life’s not always a picnic, we’ve compiled an edit of supercharged moisturisers that will swoop to your rescue and go the extra mile when your skin needs more support than your regular, everyday moisturiser. Meet the Superhero Moisturisers…

For When Skin is Very Dull…

If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, staying up late, binge drinking and eating badly you may notice your skin is suffering and appears grey, sallow and lacklustre. One of the quickest ways to restore radiance and the youthful glow associated with healthy-looking skin is to boost skin cells with oxygen. Natura Bisse Oxygen Cream contains stabilised hydrogen peroxide which changes into water and oxygen once massaged into skin and so works immediately to restore elasticity, brighten and enrich dull-looking skin.

Dull complexions can also be due to a build-up of dead skin cells gathering on the skin’s surface, look for a moisturiser containing skin-sloughing fruit enzymes, such as papaya, which will gently exfoliate and brighten dull skin. Glycolic acid, a member of the alpha hydroxy family, is also a key ingredient to look out for when it comes to gentle, surface-level exfoliation. Caudalie Vinoperfect Dark spot Correcting Glycolic Night Cream promotes a fresher, more luminous appearance by morning and also helps to reduce the look of dark spots and refine skin tone.

For When Skin Needs Protection…

If your skin is exposed to urban environments on a weekly basis then you should be considering using a moisturiser designed to defend against free radical damage. When it comes to fighting free radicals, antioxidants such as green tea, ferulic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, retinol and resveratrol are most effective and help to prevent heavy metals and environmental pollution from penetrating the skin’s barrier and in turn and breaking down skin cells, which leads to premature ageing.

We recommend investing in Caudalie’s VineActiv 3-in-1 Moisturizer; designed for city dwellers its powerful formula limits the quantity of pollutant particles that penetrate the skin and visibly corrects and prevents the initial signs of ageing caused by oxidative stress.

For When Skin is Breaking Out…

It’s a common misconception that oily, acne-prone complexions don’t need moisture. Wrong! While it may seem counterintuitive to add moisture to skin that appears oily, it’s important to keep skin well hydrated as a lack of moisture will encourage glands to overproduce oil and lead to further congestion. When skin is undergoing a breakout, instead of stepping away from your daily moisturiser, simply switch up your routine with oil-free or water-based formulas, such as Darphin’s Hydraskin Light Gel Cream or Goldfaden MD’s Detox Hydrating Gel.

Lightweight and non-comedogenic, these gel formulas will provide skin with hydration but without clogging pores. Key ingredients to look out for include sebum-regulating salicylic acid, which will slough away dead skin cells that can lead to blocked pores and anti-bacterial tea tree and eucalyptus oil, which will help to reduce inflammation and infection.

For When Skin is Dehydrated….

Certain factors, such as too much exposure to sun, wind or a lot of fluctuations in temperature can result in a sudden flare-up of dehydration. In these instances, you need to reach for an ultra hydrating moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Kendra Flockhart, Education Executive at Darphin Paris, recommends avoiding active ingredients such as AHAs/BHAs and salicylic acid as they are too stimulating and aggressive and can affect the delicate skin barrier. Sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate, soap, high fragrance, colourants and alcohol are also ingredients to stay clear of.
