Your Guide To A Healthy Scalp

scalp health

If you’re unhappy with the condition of your hair, take a closer look at the state of your scalp; it’s the key to strong, super-swishable hair. But this rather unglamorous body part has largely been neglected until now, thanks to a myriad of dedicated tinctures, shampoos and conditioners to remedy a weary crown. Here, Parisian colourist Christophe Robin and Living Proof chemist Judy Nguyen share their top tips for maintaining good scalp health and a killer mane to match.

Exfoliate Weekly

“When your scalp is sensitised – due to stress, diet, pollution, excess oil production or an overload of hair products – it can cause deficiencies in the hair, resulting in weak, thin tresses,” says Christophe. Apply a salt–based scrub such as his Purifying Cleansing Scrub with Sea Salt once a week to help detox your scalp from a buildup of the above daily aggressors.

Don’t Overdo Dry Shampoo

“It’s a great last-minute hair refresher, but you should never sleep with dry shampoo in your hair,” advises Christophe. “It’s like going to bed with your makeup on – any dry shampoo that’s left on your scalp will be absorbed and act as a barrier.” Poorly rinsed shampoos and conditioners tend to suffocate the scalp too, he says. Consider using a scalp-friendly dry shampoo like IGK Hair’s First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo and do a deep hair cleanse before bed. Try Christophe Robin’s Purifying Shampoo with Jujube Bark Extract.

Make Time For Massage

For hair to grow healthy and strong you need a hearty blood supply. Christophe recommends massaging your entire scalp in the shower to stimulate circulation. “Flip your head upside down to increase blood flow even more.” Add a handheld massaging tool to the mix for extra blood flow-boosting power. Keep Bacteria in Check

The balance of good and bad bacteria on your scalp (its microbiome) has an effect on the condition of your scalp. Too much ‘bad’ can lead to a dry scalp together with itching and flaking,” says Judy. Living Proof’s Restore Dry Scalp Treatment uses a Vitamin B3 and Glycerin complex to help rebalance the scalp’s microbiome by killing off the bad bacteria and allowing the good to grow. Apply it directly to the scalp, three times a week to, literally get to the root of the problem.
